A native of Chicago by way of Santa Cruz, Calif. and Detroit, Mark Zaretsky lives in New Haven, CT and has worked at the New Haven Register for more than two decades. During his tenure he has won a number of awards and has covered New Haven City Hall through parts of two administrations, as well as West Haven, Milford, East Haven, Branford, Stratford and Orange, CT plus Tweed New Haven Regional Airport and other regional issues. His latest assignment is covering West Haven, along with a beat centered around Long Island Sound -- its environment, its industries, shipping, marinas and recreation. He also writes occasional travel stories and regular blues and roots music stories. The latter is a spin-off of Zaretsky's other career as a professional blues musician and harmonica teacher. For the past 15 or so years, he has spent many of his nights as the harmonica player, singer and leader of The Cobalt Rhythm Kings, one of Connecticut's leading blues bands. When not working, Zaretsky likes to spend time walking and hiking, listening to, seeing and playing live music, reading, traveling to far-flung destinations and cooking at home.
